Basmala: The Unshakable Palestinian Artist

I am Basmala, a Palestinian artist.

I found in art the place where I can speak honestly without needing words. Every painting I create carries a part of me: my life, my experiences, and the things I have been through. That is why I want my art to have meaning and a message above aesthetic appeal.

What motivates me as an artist is the desire to share what I feel with others and to let my paintings speak about humanity, hope, and the memories that should never be forgotten. I paint because I believe a painting can touch hearts, preserve stories, and carry my voice to places far beyond where I am. Whenever I finish a piece, I feel as though I have left a piece of my heart within it.

I aspire to graduate high school and for art to open new doors that will help me develop my talent. I dream of traveling one day, not to escape the place where I belong, but to learn and grow as an artist, to gain new experiences, and to participate in art exhibitions around the world. 

I hope my artwork reaches as many people as possible, allowing me to raise the name of Palestine wherever I go and to prove that talent can flourish even in the most difficult circumstances.

I want art to become the reason the world hears my voice and sees our story through eyes filled with humanity and hope.

My message to the world is that art is not a luxury, it is a mission. It has the power to plant hope, preserve memory, and bring people together no matter what language they speak. I hope that everyone who sees my paintings leaves feeling something beautiful, or is reminded that hope never dies and that dreams are always worth holding onto, no matter how long the journey may be. I will continue to paint because art is not simply a hobby to me- it is my voice, my path, and my dream, and I will continue pursuing it, God willing.

Basmala, 16, joined our team after being forcibly displaced from Khan Younis to Al-Mawasi in Gaza, writing "[I am stuck] between a tent that cannot keep out the cold and the memory of a home once filled with warmth."

Basmala's artwork is featured throughout much of our latest T-fil Collection, capturing themes of pride, hope, and deep-rooted belonging. We are constantly inspired by her eloquence, unwavering hope, and extraordinary talent.

Thanks to your support, we’ve invested over $2,000 directly in our growing community of young artists in Gaza by purchasing their artwork, helping them earn income through the creative joy every child deserves to experience.

Rather than tying a child's income to product sales through royalties or a percentage of proceeds, we purchase their artwork upfront and continue commissioning new pieces. This ensures their earnings are not dependent on how many shirts are sold, providing them with reliable, dignified income while allowing them to focus on creating.

Through this model, our young artists have created more than 100 original artworks, and we continue to invest in both new and existing artists by purchasing additional pieces, regardless of our sales.
